History
Diagnosed in 1997 with a brain tumor, Maynard Eugley, began having visual difficulties in January, 1999. His doctor operated on what was believed to be only scar tissue. Within days, however, Mr. Eugley was experiencing a decline in his ability to function and care for himself and was transferred to New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland (NERHP) for intensive therapy.
Unfortunately, he was not responsive to the rehab efforts and soon thereafter, doctors concluded the brain tumor had returned. In the ensuing weeks, his wife, Helen, and family kept a 24-hour vigil, along with the NERHP staff members.
In February, Mr. Eugley passed away, and Mrs. Eugley sent $1,000 to NERHP. "I didn't care what they did with the money as long as it was used for something to do with cancer," said Mrs. Eugley. "When they told me our donation was the beginnings for the Cancer Connections Conference, I was very excited."
Designated for Southern Maine cancer patients, the program's goal is to simplify access to cancer treatment and services through education.
Mrs. Eugley never imagined that her donation would go so far. "My husband would be so happy!"
